In 2023, ECHO commissioned Nita Education to build a traditional Tasmanian Aboriginal canoe, known as a Ningher.
The Ningher canoe will be back and on display at ECHO 2026!
Nita collected the bark from the Stringy Bark Tree and spent months making huge lengths of rope. They soaked the stringy bark and then plaited it with cutting grass. The resulting rope is incredibly strong.
The Ningher is a remarkably stable and sturdy canoe and was used by Tasmanian Aborigines to journey to offshore islands to hunt seasonally plentiful food, such as mutton birds and seals.
It is a work of art and an example of the skills and rich culture of the Palawa People
